ELECTRIC OR NON-ELECTRIC DETONATOR
FIXOR Binary Explosive can be detonated by an electric or non-electric detonator.
Detonators tested to date have contained 0.8 grams of PETN. If only lower strength detonators are available, then test the reliability of FIXOR detonation before any deployment against ordnance. If a FIXOR fails to detonate, the bottle will rupture and a localized FIXOR fire will result. An alternative is to use detonating cord as detailed below.
The detonator should be positioned so that there is a distance of 75 mm (3 in.) from the end of the detonator to the top of the FIXOR. Mark this distance on the detonator leg wires prior to insertion of the detonator into the FIXOR to ensure proper detonator placement.
Simultaneously initiate multiple FIXORs by using detonating cord as detailed below. Tests have shown that there may be a slight delay between the firing times of the detonators and this will disrupt the FIXORs causing them to fail to detonate (as evidenced by the FIXOR burning).
Do not bundle FIXORs together and then initiate only one of the FIXORs in the bundle. Propagation of the detonation between the FIXORs is not reliable.
Bottles of FIXOR™ must be individually initiated as propogation of the detonation wave is not reliable.
DETONATING CORD AND SIMULTANEOUS DETONATION OF MULTIPLE FIXORS
FIXOR can be detonated by "sensitized detonating cord", which is detonating cord with a military or commercial detonator crimped on the end of the detonating cord. Initiate the detonating cord using normal firing procedures.
FIXOR can be detonated by detonating cord with a ULI knot (similar to a hangman's knot) tied in the end of the detonating cord. The ULI knot should have at least 6 turns in it. Initiate the detonating cord using normal firing procedures.
The detonator or ULI knot in the detonating cord should be positioned so that there is a distance of 75 mm (3 in.) from the bottom end of the detonator or ULI knot to the top of the FIXOR. Mark this distance on the detonating cord prior to insertion of the detonating cord into the FIXOR to ensure proper detonator or ULI knot placement.
When simultaneously initiating multiple FIXORs use a short length of "sensitized" or ULI knotted detonating cord in each FIXOR. Bring the other ends of the detonating cord together and initiate all of the lengths of detonating cord with one detonator. This will ensure that all of the FIXORs will detonate simultaneously.
